Medical treatment for Varicose veins

Varicose veins develop because of reversal of blood flow in the veins causing stagnation of blood in the leg. All treatment is aimed at reversing this process.

Compression therapy

Compression effectively pushes all the edema fluid back into the circulation and prevents stagnation of blood in the veins. All the complications of varicose vein happens around the ankle . Hence compression should start from the foot all the way upto the thigh or knee depending on the extent of varicose veins. Compression can be by elasto crepe bandage or by graded compression stockings. This effectively reduces leg swelling and helps in healing of eczema and ulcer.

Elevation of the leg

Elevating the leg above the heart empties the vein and reduces the venous stagnation. During the course of the day leg should be elevated for a short time

Foot movement

Veins are emptied by active movement of the calf muscle. That is why calf muscle is called the peripheral heart. People who do prolonged desk job without movement are prone to venous diseases including deep vein thrombosis. Hence constant pedalling movement of the foot should be done while sitting

Skin Care

Stagnation of blood leads to leakage of blood from the vein which causes the dark pigmentation and itching. Hence applying moisturising creams over the affected area will protect the skin.

Wound care

If there is ulcer regular cleaning and dressing of the wound should be done .Compression stocking should be worn over the dressing Weight reduction and regular exercise also improves venous circulation.
